Medical Spa News: New Dermal Fillers On the Way to Market as 63% of Patients Choose Facial Injectables Over Plastic Surgery!

New injectables are hitting the market and leading many patients to choose these dermal fillers instead of plastic surgery. One example is Evolence, a collagen filler that was developed in Israel and is now being tested for use I the US by the Food and Drug Administration. Patents who have used it report that the desired improvement is attained in areas that previously might have required plastic surgery for adequate results.

The approved list of facial fillers and wrinkle removers in the US includes Botox, Restylane and Juvederm. These have become so popular that manufacturers, suppliers and physicians are anxious to come up with more. In 2006 alone for example Botox, an anti wrinkle treatment was used by more than three million patients. Restylane was used by one and a half million. Surveys taken of US women in the appropriate age range of 35 to 609 show that 63 percent, well more than half, would choose to use a facial injectable treatment instead of a surgical procedure if the choice were available and the results similar. Advantages to injectables are no recovery time, immediate results and no need for cutting or incisions. With that as the positive side, is there a downside? Only a few injectables are not absorbed by the human body. Since most are, patients must return for injections as maintenance to keep the new look.

Evolence is a bit different from some injectables because it uses porcine collagen which is not broken down and absorbed by the body as quickly as bovine collagen. Some physicians report results lasting longer, up to six moths or more with expectations of results lasting a year or more. Doctors who use Evolence say that reducing the nasolabial folds, those creases of skin that run from the corners of the mouth to the sides of the nose, I the lips and under the eyes are particularly helped by Evolence.

Another injectable soon to be seen in the US is Puragen and Puragen Plus, facial fillers that are made from hyaluronic acid. They are similar to Restylane and Juvaderm. Sooth gels, they will last about six months, with FDA approval now pending, but in use in c
Canada. Another is Perlane, comparable to Restylane and currently under study by the FDA. It requires no allergy testing and is a non-animal soft tissue filler that works best in the deep tissues of the face.

Others include Reloxin and Puretox. Reloxin is said by many to be the best competitor to Botox to come along, equivalent and able to treat a wider area.  The same is said of Puretox, which takes effect quicker and lasts longer.

With all of the new fillers coming onto the market, many patients will no longer look towards plastic surgery, but instead find what they need in the available injectable fillers.
