Success Lies in Spotting Imporant Beauty Industry Trends
Keeping an eye on spa treatment trends is essential to stay competitive. The spa market is relatively new in the US in its current form and is constantly changing. It is also intensely competitive. You’ve worked hard to get the clients you have and want to retain them as well as add to your client base, and this can be more easily accomplished by staying up on trends in the industry, knowing what treatments and services are popular in other areas and are likely to become polar in your area. Then you will be able to answer the questions clients ask you, and plan accordingly. For instance, if your spa does not currently offer microdermabrasion, a treatment popular across the entire country which is likely to continue in popularity, then you are already missing out on a lot of potential profit.
How do you spot the trends in order to become prepared for the next big wave? If you live and work in the Midwest then take a look at both coasts. California and the large metro areas of the east coast like New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Boston tend to get hit by new trends first. Take a look at the industry journals and subscribe if possible to online newsletters related to the spa industry that originate in those areas. If you live and work in a rural area, in the suburbs or in a small city, take a look at the larger metro areas near you. For instance, someone who works in rural Georgia should look at Atlanta to see what is popular, knowing that it will eventually work its way to the rest of the state. If in Springfield, Missouri looking at St. Louis and Kansas City will give an idea. If in Roswell, New Mexico take a look at El Paso, Texas. Trends always it large urban areas first.
If you life and work in one of the large urban areas, where should you look for guidance? If on the east coast, look at the west, and vice versa. And, take a look at Europe. The medical spa model came to the US from Europe and it is a safe bet that emerging trends in Europe will gain popularity and come to the US. Look at London, Paris, Rome, Munich, Berlin and Brussels as test markets for your city. Whatever is popular there now, will probably be popular in your city in a year or two.
Will you be ready?
