A Reader Asked: Is the 600 Hour Basic Course for Aestheticians Sufficient or Do I Need the 1200 Hour Master Course?
When becoming an aesthetician most students start by taking the 600-hour basic course. It is listed as basic but it does offer an excellent educational foundation. This 600 hour program is required in many US states to become a clinician or aesthetician. While 600 hours isn’t enough to make someone a master of every aspects of the profession, it does provide enough of an understanding of aesthetics to get a person well on their way, gaining practical experience through doing, hopefully gaining mentoring from an older and more experienced aesthetician and finding continuing education coursework to take along the way.
Many schools offer a Masters course as well, designed for those who prefer an advanced level of education and training before entering the workforce.
See the sample program outlines for each below
Courses may offer: Advanced Facial Treatments, Includes Hot/ Cold Stone Facial, Advanced Exfoliation Techniques, (including Chemical Peeling: Beta hydroxy acids, Alpha hydroxy acids, Jessner, Active Enzyme Peeling and Microdermabrasion), Spa Body Treatments, Mud Compress Treatment, Seaweed wraps, Full body Bronzing, Body wraps, Cellulite Treatment, Detoxification, Herbal wraps, Stone therapy treatments, Advanced Manicures and Pedicures, Credo blade, Acid peels, Callous removal, Medical Procedures, Pre and postoperative care, Advanced Lymphatic Drainage, Basic Knowledge of laser treatments and procedures.
Taking advantage of the chance to taking the Masters course, although not required, is a good idea if you are serious about your profession. Life is a learning process, as is business, and especially any business dealing with people and their health like aesthetics. As a professional you owe it to yourself to continue your education in a Masters course if you can find the time to take the advanced course, and you have the finances available to do so.
