Modern Microdermabrasion Treatment: An Overview of the Diamond Tip
Microdermabrasion, a cosmetic procedures, is very popular in day spas, doctors’ offices and especially these days in medical spas, and it has had new advances recently making the procedure even more popular and beneficial.
Microdermabrasion refers to a process in which the stratum corneum or dead outermost surface of the client’s skin, is either partially or completely removed by a light abrasion process. The different methods used include mechanical abrasion from jets of zinc oxide or aluminum oxide crystals, fine organic particles, or a roughened surface. Particles are then removed through the wand or hand piece through which the abrasive particles are initially sent. Many people confuse microdermabrasion with the more severe procedure of dermabrasion which is carried out under either general or light anesthesia by a physician.
Microdermabrasion is utilized to remove sun-damaged skin and lessen scarring and dark spots on the skin. The procedure is not very painful and requires no anesthetic. Microdermabrasion can be used medically for scar removal when the scar is raised above the surrounding skin, but is less effective with sunken scars. There is really no evidence that mcirodermabrasion stimulates the formation of collagen however. Microdermabrasion can also be used for the treatment of acne, but it does require repeated treatments. It should not be used by those patients who have taken the medication Accutane or Isotretinion in the past year.
Previously only carried out using abrasive crystals, it has become more common these days in microdermabrasion to use a wand with a roughened surface. This procedure requires no medical oversight and will commonly be used in conjunction with facial spa treatments. Also there are many machines available to use for performing microdermabrasion.
Innovations in the industry has led to two basic choices in microdermabrasion: Crystal microdermabrasion and diamond microdermabrasion. Crystal microdermabrasion systems are the more traditional treatment and they rely on tiny crystals that are blasted onto the skin to perform the exfoliating process. Still widely used, the introduction of alternatives such as diamond microdermabrasion systems have led to a trend away from this treatment system. Diamond microdermabrasion systems operate without need crystals with the exfoliation process occurring when a diamond tipped head makes contact with the skin and abrades against it, breaking away dead skin which is sucked away from the patient or client. These diamond systems are quite popular and will only become more so in the future.
