History of Human Anatomy

The study of human anatomy began at least as early as 1600 BC since an ancient Egyptian papyrus showed the heart, liver, kidneys, spleen, uterus and bladder, as well as a recognition that the blood vessels come from the heart.  This papyrus shows the heart as the source of the blood supply.  The ancient Greeks were the culture of Hippocrates, source of the Hippocratic oat taken by physicians.  Hippocrates seems to have had a basic understanding of the skeletal and muscle structure and knowledge of some organs.  Galen, in the second century, is known to have compiled and collected the works of many previous anatomy writers and continued on himself through the performance of vivisection of animals.  His book of drawings of dog anatomy was the most popular anatomy textbook for 1500 years, the Grey’s Anatomy of its time.  Claimed to be a heretic his work was destroyed by the church, but preserved by Arabic doctors, and passed on to the Renaissance doctors that way.

Anatomy is a fascinating study in itself, and it is only through a good knowledge that an aesthetician can truly reach potential.
